The Joi of Art

By JTavarez

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Sophomore, Economics and Journalism double major, Joi Dandridge has been showing the community her creativity for years. With her involvement in the Shadow Theater Company, located in Denver, Colorado, she has been expressing herself through Theater and creative writing.

As a Denver native, Joi has always wanted to give back to her community and show her love of art through her poetry. “I have a voice through writing”, Dandridge said. She believes that people have the power to make a difference through exertion, art being hers.

She writes her poetry to exemplify her love of creativity and will to make a difference. “I leave my own traces of Joi through my community” proclaimed Dandridge. Using it as an avenue for people to know what she’s thinking in a more creative way.

With hopes of getting more people involved in her artistic revolution she has a created a blog named, “Soul Tree”. She aspires to get people to “start talking” about current issues that are important to us.

She is the first of her family to go to a University and sees it as a blessing to be an example for her two sisters, Teonna and Anjunea.

  1. Thanks for changing Dandridge, it makes a world of difference!

I like how you call my poetry an "artistic revolution", I guess that is what I'm trying to do!

I also want to say that I am considered a first generation student, but I am not the first in my family to attend a university( university may be lower cased as well because it is not specific to which university). I know that might sound confusing but do you get what I'm trying to say?

  2. Quotes should usually have their own paragraph. Also, partial quotes are often distracting and/or confusing.

Other than that, I liked the angle you took on Joi's life. You captured the interesting aspects of her quite well.

Maybe you could reword the first sentence to draw the reader in more?

  3. I also forgot to say that theater is spelled theatre in this specific context. The word will also be lower cased the second time you mention it in the first paragraph.
