Horses Provide Young Inspiration

By K.M. Spence

FORT COLLINS, Colo— Newswriting at Colorado State University first meets and proves to have many different styles and opinions on journalism. The students have diverse opinions on politics and news programs, but the one similarity that can be found is their interest in journalism. Many students have aspirations to becoming popular editors or other forms of the media. One of these students in particular is junior Animal Science and Journalism major Chelsea Metheny.

Chelsea grew up in a small town in Michigan called St. Clair. She soon realized after graduating that what she wanted to accomplish in life had to take place somewhere outside of Michigan, which brought her to Fort Collins. Chelsea loves the outdoors mainly riding horses, which brought her to discover her true calling. She hopes to one day work for a publication that focuses on large animals.

When Chelsea was 18 years-old, she met the editor of the American Quarter Horse Journal, Christine Hamilton. After meeting her, Chelsea soon discovered that eventually she would like to write for the American Quarter Horse Journal. She learned that in order to write for this journal she must learn more about large animals. With her love for horses and the inspiration she found from Christine Hamilton, she discovered she wants to major in Animal Science and Journalism.

“I enjoy journalism because I can combine both my knack for writing and my passion for animals in one profession,” Meheny said. “I also like that I can convey information and ideas about the horse and cattle industry through factual and scientific writing.”

  1. I liked that you included my quote at the end, it was a good way to tie everything together. I also liked that that you mentioned how I was inspired to be in journalism. The only factual error that I can see it that you mispelled my last name in the last paragraph: Meheny=Metheny. Other than that, maybe just work on tightening up your structure a little bit. Great job!
